i got it, will i act upon it?

I heard something last night that I'm sure I've heard before but not really HEARD until last night. Someone in my Bible Study just matter of factly mentioned,

"If you're depressed, all you have to do is stop thinking about yourself."

See - not very profound, right?

Being honest, I've had some pretty harsh bouts of depression in my life. I'm past those, but the hard part is they keep wanting to sneek their way back up. It's been really rough but I wonder how much of it existed because all I could/would do was think of myself? How might things have been different if I took real action to get off my butt and listen to someone else's life and problems...or go somewhere and actually help someone else. How many oppertunities have I missed to help someone else because I spend so much time thinking of my own 'issues.' I know I don't have to look far to find people who have it off so much worse than I do.

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus..."

happy droid

Where did the weekend go? My parents and Annetta drove down this past Friday and arrived in Lynchburg Friday night. They left this morning to drive back and they left Annetta here! It's so weird to think about, Nett lives right down the road from me at Libery University. I haven't seen her yet, outside of my parents being here, so it will probably take a little bit for that reality to sink in. It'll be fun to have her here! I hope she loves her college experience here and means a ton of amazing people and touches many lives as well.

I know Dennis is reading this, but I must sing his praises for a minute. He gets along so well with my family and they just love him. I don't have to worry about leaving him alone in the room with my parents, he doesn't freak out about that. He even invited my dad to go watch football with the guys. He didn't have to hang out with us at all but he did, and it made for a very enjoyable weekend.

My last exciting event of the weekend was getting my new DROID Eris. It's uber sweet. I hadn't planned on getting a new phone until February when my phone was eligable for an upgrade but unavoidable circumstances lead to me purchasing this new, amazing, device. Well... some might argue with the 'unavoidable.' I was getting ready to go to dinner with the family on Saturday night and decided to throw a quick load of my sheets into the laundry. I started the washer and started looking for my phone. I had just heard the text alert go off so I needed to make sure it wasn't Dennis asking me something before he headed over. I searched high and low for the thing. I unfolded all my blankets that I had taken off my bed, moved my bed and searched by headlamp... couldn't find the darn thing! I ran upstairs and texted my mom from my computer and asked her to call my phone. I ran back down to listen to it but the washer was SO loud in my room that I stopped it mid cycle so that I could listen. No luck. Dennis came and we were running late for dinner so I just left figuring I'd look for it when we got back (and forgetting to restart the washer). My mom and I looked again, EVERYWHERE. Then this little inkling of a thought came to my mind. The last time I saw it was on my bed, what if it went in the washer with my sheets? Naw... I'm smarter than that! I knew my phone was on my bed, I would never be that person to do something like that. So I started the washer and we went back upstairs with no luck and no phone. It didn't take much convincing on their part to make me look in the washer. So I went down, opened the lid, not at ALL expecting to see anything, but there it was. That shiny, blue chocolate - sitting in a foot of water. And not only was it just sitting there, but it HAD BEEN sitting there, in the pool, for a good few hours. Tried putting it in a baggie with rice to help absorb the water, but no luck. I felt so dumb, I'm not the kind of girl that stuff happens to. Oh well, I have a droid, all has worked out for the best... ;-)

let your roots grow deep in Him

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

~Colossians 2:6–8 (NLT)

legacy

I'm reading through a book my grandma gave to me. Last year I had her fill out "A Grandparent's Legacy" after I realized that she was my only living grandparent and by not doing this earlier, I'd missed out on SOO many stories, memories, and great pieces of advice.

I love reading about all the stories of her childhood. Trying to imagine life with out running water, electricity, phones and school buses is almost impossible for me - but the thing I love the most, is how she ties a Bible verse into almost every scenario. And it's not like she is writing on a topic and goes to a concordance to find a verse on that topic... no, she writes out her story and advice and a bible verse just naturally flows out of it. I don't even know some of them are verses until she lists the passage at the end. It's so precious and I desire that to be my heart.

Why is it that I feel my life is so much more complicated than hers is? Why do I think that I have so much less time to read and memorize scripture than she did? Why do I sometimes think of the Bible as being outdated and not as necessary? She has SO many great lessons in here and continually is pressing into my heart how absolutely important God's Word is. He wrote that to me... She keeps telling stories of times which were tough. I read them, I see the outcomes, I see how she was faithful to the Lord, I see how the Lord was faithful to her. It's an incredible testimony and I'm becoming jealous that it isn't mine. I pray that I never become too lazy to be faithful to the Lord. What better legacy could I leave to my children and grandchildren?
